Transoesophageal echocardiography
A transoesophageal echocardiogram is a specialised cardiac imaging procedure that uses sound waves to create detailed images of the heart’s structure and function. Dr Chia is considered a sub-specialist expert in this technique, and your cardiologist may be referring you to Dr Chia for her expert skills in this area.
Know that it is a safe procedure, and gives the highest quality information in conditions such as potential heart infections, valve problems, and blood clots. The information will help your cardiologist best manage your cardiac issue.
You’ll be put to sleep during the test to make sure you’re comfortable. Dr. Chia has an expert anesthesiologist who knows exactly what to do to make you feel good.
The test is done by putting a small probe into your mouth, just like a gastroscopy camera. Then, the probe slides down your oesophagus, which is just behind your heart. This way, Dr. Chia can get clear pictures of parts of your heart that are hard to see with any other technique.
The whole procedure takes about 20 minutes, and then you’ll have a short time to recover before you go home.
Dr Chia is considered by many other cardiologists as an expert in transoesophageal echocardiography. If you have any questions about this test, feel free to ask our practice.
